3 April 2011 (Phnom Penh) – The University of Cambodia (UC) hosted the 2011 Khmer New Year Celebration and Fundraising Concert at the UC Campus. The event was presided over by H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, UC President and Personal Adviser to Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Lok Chum Teav Khem Rany, Director General of SEATV. H.E. Samraing Kamsan, Secretary of State, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and Senior Advisor to the President of the University of Cambodia was also in attendance.
Superstar sensations Mr. Chhorn Sovannareach, Ms. Ouk SokunKanha, DJ Adda, and DJ Kdeb performed hit songs to a crowd of UC staff, faculty, students, fan club members, and the general public. It was an electrifying event that was well received by the UC community.
The Khmer New Year Celebration and Fundraising Concert kicked off the agenda with morning activities that lasted from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Activities included Khmer Popular Games, Clay Pot Breaking Game, Ang Koung, Sack Race, Chhorl Chhoung, Hidden Handkerchief, Coca-Cola Drinking Competition, Leaf Race, Clay Pot Dancing, Balloon Carrying, and Mango Eating Competition.
Afternoon activities lasted from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. and constituted the Khmer New Year Concert. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn gave the Keynote Address. The entertainment show followed his speech. That show consisted of the Khmer New Year Wishing Dance, the UCSS’s New Year song, Kingdom of Wonder song performed by Payap University exchange students, a Fashion Show of Traditional Clothes, UC students’ songs, a talent show by orphans from Kompong Speu, Traditional Dance “Robam Ken”, and a dramatic performance by UC students. From 7:10 – 9:00 p.m., the UC community enjoyed music and Khmer New Year dancing.
A donation box was passed around during the event to raise money for two orphanages in Cambodia: Orphan Care and Training Organization (OCTO) and Riverkids. All donations were donated to the two orphanages.
