FACILITIES, RESOURCES AND

ACTIVITIES FOR

STUDENTS, RESEARCHERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Centrally located, the University of Cambodia has some of the finest facilities and resource centers available in Cambodia. To serve the needs of its students, faculty and the public, the University of Cambodia has established the following activities, facilities and resource centers.

1. LIBRARY

The University of Cambodia is most fortunate to have the Toshu Fukami Library, which is considered to be one of the best libraries in Cambodia. With over 50,000 items, it houses one of the most extensive collections of books, periodicals, magazines and newspapers in the country.

The Toshu Fukami Library (library@uc.edu.kh) is open to students, faculty, and the general public from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week (except holidays). It is an ideal place for reading, conducting research and doing homework.

2. BOOKSTORE

The UC Bookstore complements the Toshu Fukami Library and serves the needs of students, faculty members and the public. The bookstore offers a wide variety of books, writing materials and other items useful to students, university faculty and the public.

3. COMPUTER LABORATORY

This is equipped with a large number of computers for teaching and research purposes, allowing students to engage in E-learning.

4. INTERNET CENTER AND VIRTUAL LIBRARY

This offers students and the public fast internet access; and also permits researchers and library patrons to access the Virtual Library, where they can conduct research and have access to up-to-date reference and other materials.

5. LANGUAGE LABORATORY

In another first for Cambodia, we have set up a Language Laboratory as part of our drive to increase student’s capabilities in English. This is supplied with computers and special software, so that students can practice their English pronunciation, improve their vocabulary, and other skills.

6. CONFERENCE CENTER

To promote learning dialogues, the UC Conference Center is an ideal open space equipped with sound systems which can accommodate training groups of up to 400. Shortly to be upgraded, the UC Conference Center is also open to the public for rental.

7. OTHER FACILITIES

The University Café, open to everyone, is located in the forecourt of the Graduate School on Street 282. It offers a variety of hot food, drinks and snacks in a cool, breezy and comfortable environment: users with lap-top computers can also enjoy wireless internet access. Prices are reasonable and large groups can be catered for. The canteen is open from 7:00 am to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; and from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The University of Cambodia has ample parking available for cars; and also, between the Administrative Building and the Graduate School, for motorcycles. Trained, professional guards supervise the parking area to ensure that no loss or damage is sustained to vehicles or motorcycles while on University grounds.

8. OFFICE OF STUDENT ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The University provides students with regular academic counseling and guidance to ensure that they will make substantial progress towards their degree plans.

9. LEADERSHIP AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER

This opened in mid-2006, to provide support for students to search for future career and job opportunities, including additional professional training and internship programs after graduation. It also offers the opportunity for both our students and the public at large to learn about, and develop, their leadership potential.

10. STUDENT SENATE

This innovation comprises self-elected undergraduate and graduate bodies from the student population which, with the support of the University of Cambodia, are responsible for organising and coordinating extracurricular activities to facilitate interactions amongst students and between them and the faculty.

11. PUBLIC LECTURES AND FORA

i. Public Engagement Lecture Series

The University of Cambodia hosts series of lectures which feature speakers and leaders from a variety of academic fields and professional backgrounds. The Public Engagement Lecture series provides a platform from which to encourage both Cambodian and international scholars to exchange theoretical and experiential views, bring intellectual enrichment to the community at large, promote policy-analysis dialogue, and stimulate debate as a form of conflict resolution in addressing issues relevant to Cambodia. The lecture series is comprised of three different fora:

  1. Public Lecture Forum: This includes national and international scholars as well as speakers working in civil society, private sectors, public institutions, and government agencies. Speakers discuss issues relevant to the local Cambodian community and the Asia Pacific.
  2. Leadership Forum: This involves speakers working in high-level positions in the government, and in regional and international organizations. Speakers discuss topics related to policy-development and nation-building, as well as current issues in regional and global affairs.
  3. Cambodia’s Intellectual Dialogue Forum: This features Cambodian intellectuals, researchers and cultural producers, including University of Cambodia’s own faculty members working in Cambodia. Topics presented focus on a wide range of academic research.

Our objective for the Public Engagement Lecture series is to collaborate with communities, local and international development organizations, businesses, and the government to address critical and multifaceted issues confronting Cambodia and to share knowledge, development and national-building approaches. The University of Cambodia is committed to upholding high standards for both academic and professional development for our students, faculty and community members. By showcasing Cambodia’s intellectual and artistic talents we hope to inspire Cambodian youth to view knowledge as a tool for building their professional careers and contributing to community development in Cambodia. More importantly, we want to create an opportunity for various stakeholders in Cambodia to come together in a professional setting to engage in dialogue about issues relevant to people’s personal lives as well as the future of Cambodia.

ii. East Asia Young Leaders' Forum
This is held annually, with the aim of heightening the awareness of our young about the role of Cambodia and the region in the global community, and how our aspirations can be best realised. Leaders and policy-makers in government, business, and academia come from throughout the world to discuss issues critical to East Asia. Panelists and attendees come from throughout East Asia, Europe and the United States.

12. UNIVERSITY OF CAMBODIA PRESS

The University of Cambodia is the first university in Cambodia fully committed to research, scholarship and publication. Its leading faculty members are actively engaged in research and students are encouraged to work closely with them in order to gain research experience. Through its Institute of Research and Advanced Studies and the University of Cambodia Press, the University will regularly publish studies and research findings by its faculty and students, including the Journal of Cambodian Studies.

13. UNIVERSITY OF CAMBODIA NEWSLETTER

The University of Cambodia publishes a monthly newsletter to keep students, faculty, affiliates, and the public apprised of the latest news and events at the University. The newsletter is available in e-mail format, on our website (www.uc.edu.kh), as well as in paper format from the main Administration Office.
