Offers Scholarships for Orphans

\"\"

29 January 2009 (Phnom Penh) - Starting in Term I of the 2009-2010 academic year, The University of Cambodia will initiate a new scholarship program to benefit students in the Future Light Orphanage of World Mate (FLOW).

As part of the UC-Handa Scholarships for Orphans, The University of Cambodia will offer one full scholarship and up to five partial scholarships (half scholarships as well as 20 percent tuition discounts) for those FLOW students who plan to attend UC.

All FLOW students are welcome to apply, but must meet the following requirements:
(1)   Earn a top score in the undergraduate entrance exam.
(2)   Earn a top score in the English placement test.
(3)   Submit a valid High School Diploma or an equivalent.
(4)   Submit a letter of recommendation from FLOW.

Because UC is one of only two universities in Cambodia that conduct their classes in English instead of Khmer, students will be required to complete a six-level English intensive preparation course through the university’s Center for English Studies before entering their degree programs. The scholarships will cover or go toward the cost for both the English and the degree program. Fees are outlined below:

English Intensive Program
Average US$120 per level X 6 levels = US$720

Degree Program
US$14 per credit X 136 required credit hours = US$1,904

Other fees include application fees, graduation fees, major changes to degree programs and book purchases.

In order to keep their awards for the duration of their studies, scholarship students must maintain the following criteria:

For full scholarship:
(1) 90 percent attendance.
(2) G.P.A. of 2.5 or C+ or better.
(3) Participate in university activities, meetings and conferences.
(4) Take part in an internship program – if the student is doing well academically
and does not have a job – in order to achieve hands-on working experience.

For partial scholarships (half scholarship and 20 percent tuition discount):
(1) 80 percent attendance.
(2) G.P.A. of 2.5 or C+ better.
(3) Participate in university activities, meetings and conferences.
(4) Take part in an internship program – if the student is doing well academically
and does not have a job – in order to achieve hands-on working experience.

The UC-Handa Scholarships for Orphans are made possible by The University of Cambodia. Book support of US$100 and clothing and food allowance of US$300 will also be offered through the support of Dr. Haruhisa Handa, UC Chancellor and FLOW Chairman, in collaboration with the Hawaii Group. UC would also like to recognize the generous support of FLOW foster parents.

All FLOW students are first encouraged to apply for the Samdech Hun Sen – Haruhisa Handa National Scholarships before applying for the UC-Handa Scholarships for Orphans. UC will accept all scholarship applications at any time, but will wait to confirm the results of the national high school exam before admitting candidates.
