New Academic Term Began February 21 The new academic term at the University of Cambodia began February 21. The term shows increased enrollment in various programs, and a great response to its newest FasTrax English program. The term is significant because it will be the final term for UC's first set of graduates--Master's program candidates who for the past two years have been working hard at fulfilling their course and research requirements.
UC welcomes continuing students back to its halls and new students to come see what the University has to offer.
Welcome to New Faculty Students and faculty at UC are all priviledged to have a number of new members of the faculty joining us this term.
Mr. Emanuel Rogier van Mansvelt specializes in Developmental Studies and comes to us most recently from teaching at the University of Amsterdam. He earned his Master of Social Environmental Sciences and Bachelor of Social Sciences from University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Also joining UC this term will be Ms. Linda Colombine, an attourney from the US. She is this month's "Featured Faculty Member" and is profiled below.

UN Official During UNTAC Era Speaks at UC Dr. Benny Widyono, former United Nations Secretary-General's Representative in Cambodia from 1994-1997, visited the University of Cambodia January 25 to speak about "The Current Status of the UN Reform." Dr. Widyono emphasized current efforts on Security council reform, along with the compelling issue of the "fork in the road" that the UN has reached in regards to the mounting discord between the US and various United Nations' members.
The lecture was chaired by H.E. Prince Norodom Sirivudh. It was part of the Distinguished Public Lecture Forum, and was produced by the CICP in collaboration with the University of Cambodia.
Featured Faculty Member: Linda Colombine Professor, Law and Humanities
Ms. Linda Colombine comes to the University of Cambodia from the United States. She is a lawyer, whose expertise is in family law and real estate. Ms. Colombine will begin teaching courses in Law and the humanities at the start of the new term on February 21.
Ms. Colombine has spent much time as a volunteer for organizations like AmeriCorps Vista. Her volunteer and professional experience has taught her of the power of persistence and inspired her to try to be a "force for change" at the University. She explains, "I hope to help students learn that effort is worth something, and that one person can help to change things."
Ms. Colombine earned her Juris Doctorate at Franklin Pierce Law Center (USA), and her B.A. in Psychology at Nathaniel Hawthorne College (USA).
Building East Asian Identity UC's own Hor Serey Vath, Research Fellow in the University's Institute of Research and Advanced Studies, traveled to Seoul, Korea at the end of January. Mr. Hor represented the University in participation at the "Building East Asian Identity Workshop", held January 30 - February 1.
A number of sessions covering aspects of building east Asian identity took place over the three day workshop. Topics ranged from constructing identity through educational networks to the role of popular culture in construction of a shared identity. Mr. Hor spoke on the role of education in building East Asian identity, as well as the topic of "Malay/Indonesian for an official language of the East Asian Community."
The Workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, and organizaed by the Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Participants included top faculty and researchers from universities throughout China, Japan, Korea and ASEAN.
UC Expands Facilities to New Building Several large, modern classroom spaces will be added to UC's facilities next month. Renovation and construction to an additional building on Street 282, just adjacent to the main campus, will be completed in March 2005. In addition to classroom space, the building will have dormitory space for visiting scholars, faculty or exchange students.
