UC Announces Establishment of “Dr. Handa Compensation and Memorial Fund for the Victims of the Khmer Rouge Genocide”
The University of Cambodia is delighted to announce the establishment of the “Dr. Handa Compensation and Memorial Fund for the Victims of the Khmer Rouge Genocide.” The Dr. Handa Fund is named after its principle donor who is a Japanese philanthropist named Dr. Haruhisa Handa, also known as, Dr. Toshu Fukami. Dr. Fukami is a highly successful Japanese businessman who has compassion for the Cambodian people. The Dr. Handa Fund objective is “to pay tribute to the millions of victims and survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.” The Dr. Handa Fund is a “symbolic gesture,” with the aim to console and support families who faced economical, psychological, and physical strife due to the Khmer Rouge. The fund will give priority to help those families headed by widows, who had the courage to raise a family with children on their own.
With a current budget of $1.3 million, the fund aims to reach 10,000 families and offer a humble donation of $100 to each family to be used for ceremonial, economical, and social purposes. The head of the family households who are the recipients of the donation will decide what will be the best use of the fund—for their families, to commemorate their ordeals and beloveds. The initial contribution is $1.3 million, of which $300,000 is coming out of Dr. Handa’s savings and the rest from his organization World Mate. Additional funding is hoped to be raised in the attempt to reach as many families as possible.
Dr. Haruhisa Handa and the University of Cambodia understand that there is no way, in whatever expressions that anyone can fully compensate for the tremendous loss of lives and the survivors’ traumatic difficulties cause by the Khmer Rouge regime. Dr. Handa and the University Cambodia encourages other educational and non educational institutions, governments, nongovernmental, international nongovernmental, development organizations, etc. to contribute in their own ways and to make positive contributions to the victims and survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.

UC meets with Indonesian Ambassador to Expand Educational Opportunities for Students On August 23, 2005, H.E. Mr. Nurrachman Oerip, the Indonesian Ambassador met with Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, President of UC, and his team to discuss cultural and educational collaborative exchange opportunities that would benefit both the University of Cambodia and the Gadjah Mada University. The talk outlined the possible development of cultural, educational, and language exchange programs which will create high quality learning opportunities for students.
The cultural and educational programs can raise awareness about the Cambodian culture in Indonesia and the Indonesian culture in Cambodia. Likewise, the programs will raise awareness about the importance of high-quality learning opportunities in the lives of young Cambodians and Indonesians people and their families. In both universities the exchange programs will play a critical role in broadening students’ minds to the culturally diverse world which we all live in.
FasTrax News At the end of our last period that ended on 29 July 2005, we issued 5 certificates of achievement. Students earned these by completing modules 4, 5, and 6 with a minimum of 80% on their final grades. The students studying the current term will have their final exams on the 1st and 2nd of September
The new FasTrax period will begin on September 5, 2005. At the start of the new term we will be issuing a new lab manual that will spell out clearly what each module will cover in the language lab. With this manual students will be able to fully benefit from the program. We currently issue a student manual which includes the FasTrax schedule, homework assignments, word power, etc.
UC’s Students Visiting China and Tsinghua University Professor Heng Samnang Director of Students Academic Affairs led 14 students to China in a cultural exchange program with Tsinghua University.
