Virtual Library to Open October 31st The University of Cambodia will open the doors to its new Virtual Library on October 31, at a launch cermony at 3 p.m. The Virtual Library, which is part of the Toshu Fukami Library, will serve as an ideal center for research and writing. Users will be able to access databases and materials online, as well as search the Internet for academic purposes. The Virtual Library will be open to UC students, faculty, and the public.
New E-Learning Course at UC UC students can learn "How to Write a Business Plan" in one of the University's latest "e-learning" initiatives. Instruction and interaction will take place entirely online, and will involve all students creating their own business plans at the end of the program.
This e-learning program is offered by the College of Public and Business Administration, in cooperation with the UC Business Club. Interested students can join the UC Electronic Group by registering at www.ucgroup.webhop.org.
Three New Books Published by UC Press The University of Cambodia Press will launch three new publications October 31st. The first, titled Understanding Japan and written by Dr. Toshu Fukami, will be in Khmer. The second is titled The Management of the Khmer Empire During the Angkor Empire (from 9th to 13th centuries), and was written by Michel Tranet in collaboration with Thon Hin. Also being released will be the Proceedings of the First Annual National Conference on "Cambodia's Higher Education Today: Enhancing Quality and Building Partnerships." The Conference took place April 29-30, 2004 at the University of Cambodia. The book launch of these three publications will take place at the University Conference Center on October 31 at 3:30 p.m.
Thai University Visits UC to Explore Collaboration 45 delegates from Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University (BRU) in Bangkok, Thailand paid a visit to the University of Cambodia October 25. The delegates--comprised of faculty, administrators and students--came to learn more about UC, as well as higher education in Cambodia. UC was the only university in Cambodia the delegates visited, and the University was pleased to receive them.
UC and BRU are currently exploring possibilities for collaboration and student exchange programs between the two schools. Dr. Supol Wuthisen, President of BRU, extended an invitation to UC President, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, to visit BRU in November.
New Names and Faces at UC UC welcomes Mr. Masakazu Murayama to the University as the newest addition to the Board of Advisors. Mr. Murayama is Vice Chairman of Debt Markets at Merill Lynch in Tokyo. Also deserving mention are Dr. Masami Ishida, who has suggested an exchange of publications between UC and the Institute of Developing Economies in Japan. Dr. Ishida is the Director of the Economic and Technical Cooperation Studies Group, Inter-Disciplinary Studies Center at the Institute. Mr. Mark Silliman, Chancellor of Leeward Community College at the University of Hawaii has also shown interest in working with UC. He and UC President Dr. Kao are currently exploring collaboration between the two schools.
This is Dr. Bonzon's first stay in Cambodia. Asked what he likes most about the country, he replied, "The kindness of its people, the beauty of the Mekong River, and...the rain!"
Dr. Bonzon has many years of teaching, research and consulting experience. Before coming to Cambodia, Dr. Bonzon taught courses in Computer Science at the University of Lausanne. He has also held academic positions at the University of Toronto in Canada, Stanford University in the U.S., and the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bern, Switzerland. His specialty is artificial intelligence.
Dr. Bonzon earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and his Diploma in Engineering Physics at the University of Lausanne's Institute of Technology.
New Academic Term Began October 25th Session B of the first term of the 2004-2005 academic year at the University of Cambodia began October 25, and classes are now underway. You may still apply and register for classes in Session B, but should do so as soon as possible. Seeking Submissions for Journal of Cambodian Studies The University of Cambodia is seeking articles from all disciplines for its "Journal of Cambodian Studies" (JCS). The JCS is the first scholarly journal in Cambodia to publish research solely on Cambodia. Submissions may come from various areas of academic research, but should be of strong relevance to Cambodia. Submissions from professors, researchers, scholars and graduate students are strongly encouraged. To be considered for inclusion in a future journal, please send an electronic version of your article to Ms. Noi Liang at nliang@uc.edu.kh.
