A Warm Welcome for New Faculty, Staff

UC would like to welcome several new members to the University faculty and staff.  Ms. Amanda Magrath joins us as the Director of the Center for English Studies.  Ms. Magrath has extensive teaching experience in the Middle East, and comes most recently from a position in the United Arab Emirates. We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Angus Munro, who comes to us from the National University of Singapore, and is now Dean of the College of Sciences and Technology. Also joining the University is Mr. Veasna Hash. Mr. Hash was formerly at PricewaterhouseCoopers and is now Deputy Director of Admissions and Records. We are very pleased to have Mr. Sok Phyra, who joins the University as Director of the Office of Student Academic Affairs. Also joining the University is Mr. Sotheara Sar, whom we look to as our new Assistant Dean to the College of Education. As we begin a new academic year, we look forward to working with each and every one of them.

Management, Global Learning, and Reconciliation

Addressed in Recent Lectures

The UC Distinguished Public Lecture series was continued in three lectures in July.  Dr. Martin Hilb--Professor and Managing Director of the Institute for Leadership and Human Resource Management at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland--spoke July 13th at the UC Conference Center. His lecture covered "Human Resource Management and Leadership".

Dr. Greg Emery, Director of the Global Learning Community at Ohio University, spoke on July 27th at the UC Conference Center on "Pedagogical Innovations in American Higher Education: The Global Learning Community at Ohio University".  Dr. Emery described his program's unique certificate program and its emphasis on integrative learning, student engagement, and an international perspective.  The lecture resonated with local students and faculty in attendance who are concerned with Cambodia's place in the international community.

On July 30th, Dr. Hillel Levine, Professor at Boston University and renowned writer, researcher and social leader asked the question "Is Reconciliation the Answer to Closing the Past After Unjust Regimes".  As he shared his experience with survivors of the Holocaust and the processes used to address trauma and upheaval caused in genocide and ethnic conflict in other parts of the world, a lively discussion was sparked on the upcoming Khmer Rouge Tribunals and how Cambodians will address similar issues.

UC Expands to Annex Campus

UC will add 10 more classrooms to its campus on September 1, in the first phase of its expansion to an Annex campus. The University has partnered with the National Institute of Education to expand into an Annex Building not far from UC's main campus. The expansion was planned to respond to increased enrollment and the need for more classroom space. The second phase of the expansion, to start in 2005, will be to add another 10 classrooms within the Annex Building, bringing the total to twenty new classrooms.

UC is committed to upgrading its resources and facilities for students, faculty, staff and the community along with its continued efforts in expanding its academic offerings and programs.

Seeking Submissions for Journal of Cambodian Studies

The University of Cambodia is seeking articles from all disciplines for its "Journal of Cambodian Studies" (JCS).  The JCS is the first scholarly journal in Cambodia to publish research solely on Cambodia.  Submissions may come from various areas of academic research, but should be of strong relevance to Cambodia.  Submissions from professors, researchers, scholars and graduate students are strongly encouraged. To be considered for inclusion in a future journal, please send an electronic version of your article to Ms. Noi Liang at nliang@uc.edu.kh.

Recent Additions to the Toshu Fukami Library

The University is pleased to have received a number of new books for the Toshu Fukami Library.  Recent  contributions have come from the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok and Dr. Merry White, professor of anthropology at Boston University.  The University invites students and the general public to visit the Library and make use of its growing collection of resources.
